Dead Silence book cover

Dead Silence

By: S. A. Barnes

Reviewed by Morgan

Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes is a suspenseful blend of science fiction and horror that delivers an eerie, atmospheric ride from start to finish. The story follows Claire Kovalik, a beacon repair crew leader whose job is on the verge of becoming obsolete. When her team picks up a strange distress signal, they follow it to an astonishing discovery: the Aurora, a luxury spaceliner that vanished over twenty years ago. Hoping the salvage claim will set them up for life, they board the ship—only to find whispers in the dark, flickers of movement, and messages scrawled in blood.

From the very beginning, the reader knows the outcome of Claire’s story, but it’s the tense, slow build of the events leading there that makes the novel so captivating. The dread is constant, lingering over every scene and keeping you on edge. The tone and pacing bring to mind the grandeur and tragedy of Titanic mixed with the unsettling, claustrophobic horror of Event Horizon. You know something terrible is coming, but the uncertainty of when and how keeps the suspense high.

While the novel is set in a futuristic, outer space environment, the technical details are light enough for any reader to follow. There’s no need for extensive knowledge of quantum physics or advanced science to enjoy the story. Barnes keeps the focus on the mystery, atmosphere, and psychological tension rather than dense worldbuilding.

Overall, Dead Silence is an exciting, atmospheric read that’s perfect for anyone who enjoys suspenseful mysteries with a touch of horror. It balances its sci-fi elements with accessible storytelling, making it an excellent choice for readers looking for a chilling yet approachable space thriller.

The Wishing Game

Meg Shaffer

The Wishing Game book cover

I discovered Meg Shaffer’s debut novel The Wishing Game when looking for read-alikes for Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts. Both books feature a competition that includes riddles and games, which is always fun. Add the fact that this is a book about books? Sign me up!

In The Wishing Game, author Jack Masterson is known for his popular and beloved children’s book series set on Clock Island. After an extended absence with no new entries, Masterson re-emerges to announce he’s finally written another book. The catch? There will only be one copy. The other catch? Only a few select individuals will be invited to a real-life version of Clock Island to compete and win the manuscript as a prize.

One of the selected individuals is Lucy Hart, a teacher’s aide. Lucy has been wanting to adopt a young boy named Christopher but does not have the means to do so. She accepts the challenge to compete on Clock Island hoping that this will, in some way, help her find a way to adopt him.

One of my favorite things about the book is also the trickiest to describe. Shaffer somehow deftly manages to imbue the vibes, for lack of a better word, of a middle grade novel while also still writing a piece of literary fiction for adults. This is a great pick for lifelong bibliophiles nostalgic for the days when, with the right book, anything truly seemed possible. Just be forewarned: have some tissues on hand for the last chapter or two of the novel. (You’ll thank me later.)
