Eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow just wants to keep her family together. This is made surprisingly difficult by her mother's struggle with addiction and her brother missing from the front lines of the war between the gods. Iris develops a plan to fix things, and it requires her to win the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette. However, Iris copes with her worries by sending letters to her brother. She slips the letters under her wardrobe door and they vanish, only to appear in the hands of her rival Roman Kitt, a cold, handsome man also working at the Gazette and hoping to win the promotion. Roman writes back to Iris anonymously, and the two forge a connection that follows Iris to the war's front lines. Iris must battle for her brother, the future of humankind as she knows it, and her love's future.
