Fourth Wing

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is a new fantasy/romance novel that has taken the internet by storm. Violet Sorrengail has been told by her mother, the commanding general, that instead of becoming a scribe like she has trained for years for she is to attend Basgiath War College to become a dragon rider. Violet believes this is a terrible idea since she is smaller than the other dragon riders and has a chronic illness that makes her ligaments more flexible and bones more fragile. But there is no saying no to her mother who is ordering her as the general. Joining the war college, she only has two goals: to stay alive and to stay away from her family enemy Xaden Riorson. That becomes difficult when he’s assigned as her group’s leader. Now she just has to stay alive long enough to bond with a dragon. But the longer she is there, the more she notices more sinister things going on and starts to wonder if it's her enemies she can trust more than her friends.

My favorite part of this book was the way humans and dragons interacted. I had never read a book with dragons quite like this before. In other books with dragons, they were seen as creatures to respect or stay away from. In Fourth Wing the main characters want to live harmoniously with dragons and a dragon rider’s goal is to bond with the strongest dragon so that they are protected in battle. Each dragon bond also provides the rider with special powers giving the story a magical element other than the fantastical aspect of the dragons.

While this book is technically a romance, it is less romance focused and more about the fantasy school experience. It’s kind of like Harry Potter for adults with a female main character. This book is great for those who enjoy New Adult books or who enjoy Young Adult books but would like an older main character. It’s also a great quick read for those who enjoy fantasy with a little bit of romance or even the other way around. While this is technically high fantasy it is not as difficult to follow the world building as other fantasy novels.

Two Old Broads

By: M.E. Hecht, MB & Whoopi Goldberg

two old broads book cover

I really liked this title when I stumbled upon it, but then I read the book. LOVED it! Something that I realized was lots of their advice came straight out of my mom's mouth. Even though the term "broad" is primarily defined as 60-plus, I'm almost 55, so I'm crashing the party and taking away all tips that I can. Those are being added to my old broad pocketbook. (Old broads will know what that is.)

This was a quick read. My normal M.O. is to read a chapter or two, put it on my nightstand, pick it up again in a week or two, then re-read those chapters. But this one, I read it in two days. Yeah, me! Hey, shouldn't that tell you something about the book?

The practical, two-cents advice from Whoopi and the professional advice from Dr. M.E. Hecht is a winning combination. Here's an example: dating! Goldberg prefers meeting on Zoom while Hecht preferred meeting someone through friends and sharing activities.

The duo offers wisdom, anecdotes, and one-liners. They reiterate: forget the assumptions that come with being in your 60s and beyond. Hecht says that you’re a guru, and not a number. I like that advice.

It's all about navigating the challenges of growing older. Tons of topics are covered - dealing with those inevitable aches and pains, dating, making new friends, and napping when necessary.

One takeaway for me was that I've survived the past, plan to embrace today, and will continue to prep for the future. And all the while finding more time to laugh along the way!
