Disclaimer: I first read the book in Libby, then I hopped over to hoopla to watch the movie version. Yes, I'm an equal opportunity resources patron.
When researching this book, I discovered that Creel is a YA author and this is the first adult debut novel. I'd say nicely done.
The Magic of Ordinary Days begins with a former college student who's pregnant out of wedlock. She's forced to marry a beet farmer who resides on a remote farm in Colorado. Side note: Now that I'm older, the thought of a remote farm doesn't sound so bad. HA!
The time is 1944, near the end of WWII, so when she befriends two Japanese-American sisters living in a nearby internment camp, you can imagine the sneers and stares she receives. But she's okay with that. Feeling lonely, and with her new husband, she's happy to find friends, especially those who are also passionate about their interests.
So what happens with her relationship with this "stranger," her new friendships, a new family, and a new hometown? Well, you'll have to read this book to find out.
P.S. Heads up: I got flashbacks of Little House on the Prairie and Anne of Green Gables while reading this book.
