The Magic of Ordinary Days

By: Ann Howard Creel

Reviewed by Missi

Disclaimer: I first read the book in Libby, then I hopped over to hoopla to watch the movie version. Yes, I'm an equal opportunity resources patron.

When researching this book, I discovered that Creel is a YA author and this is the first adult debut novel. I'd say nicely done.

The Magic of Ordinary Days begins with a former college student who's pregnant out of wedlock. She's forced to marry a beet farmer who resides on a remote farm in Colorado. Side note: Now that I'm older, the thought of a remote farm doesn't sound so bad. HA!

The time is 1944, near the end of WWII, so when she befriends two Japanese-American sisters living in a nearby internment camp, you can imagine the sneers and stares she receives. But she's okay with that. Feeling lonely, and with her new husband, she's happy to find friends, especially those who are also passionate about their interests.

So what happens with her relationship with this "stranger," her new friendships, a new family, and a new hometown? Well, you'll have to read this book to find out.

P.S. Heads up: I got flashbacks of Little House on the Prairie and Anne of Green Gables while reading this book.

Why We Read

I first spotted Shannon Reed’s Why We Read in a list of books related to books. A librarian interested in a book about reading books? I know. I will let you come down from the shock.

Why We Read chronicles Reed’s journey with reading from her childhood to adulthood. She shares not only her personal experiences but also reflections on other people’s relationships with reading, including students she’s taught in her Creative Writing courses. The chapters read as lighthearted but thoughtful essays with humorous, literary-inspired lists interspersed throughout, including “Signs You May Be a Female Character in a Work of Historical Fiction.” (Example? “Your best friend is a horse.”)

Reed makes it easy to see parallels between one’s own reading journey and hers, and I often found myself wanting to pull out a notebook and journal my own history while enjoying the book. One chapter that stood out to me the most, though, was Reed’s perspective on cookbooks. I confess that I’ve often viewed cookbooks as tools and not actual literature. However, she makes a very strong case on how to enjoy them as works that exist independent of any hands-on kitchen adventures.

Why We Read is relatable and witty with engaging writing and well-organized chapters that make the book flow well. All these qualities also make it a great quick weekend pick. It will appeal to anyone who has ever gotten something out of reading – whether it’s catharsis, connections, or even just free pizza.
